Families 'forced to use portaloos' after tower block's water shut off

People living in a block of flats claim they have been forced to use portaloos after their water was shut off without warning.

Mersey Court, in Seacombe, previously made the news in December when residents were left without central heating for days by housing association Magenta Living. The latest incident has seen occupants claim that their water has been turned off without warning.

All 38 homes within the block are forced to share two portaloos outside, one resident claimed. The woman, who asked not to be named said: "My block of flats have had the water turned off without notice for repairs for the weekend and It's pretty disgusting. The housing association gave us a bottle of water and there are two portaloos outside to service all 38 homes."

The situation has reportedly seen residents 'mortified'. The woman added: "I met one woman outside in her PJs waiting to use the portaloos saying about how mortified and embarrassed she was. Another resident was angry because he's having to rely on a neighbour miles away to use his shower. Everyone is pretty distressed."

The housing block is home to many vulnerable adults and children who are struggling to access the makeshift facilities, the woman claims. Many of the flats in the complex are two bedroom, meaning that up to 70 people will be forced to share the two portaloos.

The ECHO has approached Magenta Living for a comment. A spokesperson for Magenta Living said: "Magenta Living would like to apologise to the residents of Mersey Court, Seacombe for any inconvenience caused after it was necessary to turn off the water supply to the block after two serious leaks were found on Thursday April 21.

"Our contractor is today (April 22) on site repairing both leaks. The repair only becomes fully effective following an ‘adhesive drying time’ which can be for a period of up to a 12 hours. All our customers have been kept informed and provided with bottled water, with more available on site if needed, as well as two portaloos. We hope to have the water supply reinstated later tonight or more realistically early Saturday morning."
