Families evacuated from homes and trains disrupted after large fire in Hartlepool

Families were evacuated from their homes when a large fire broke out in Seaton Carew.

The blaze broke out at the allotments on Station Lane just after 7pm on Sunday.

A number of gas cylinders were suspected to be involved in the blaze which caused disruption to train services to due the proximity to tracks.

Cleveland Fire Brigade confirmed four fire engines were called to the fire and the road was still closed on Monday morning.

Police urged people to stay clear and that those living nearby should close doors and windows.

The fire caused rail disruption between Sunderland and Middlesbrough with services having to be cancelled.

A spokesperson for National Rail Enquiries said on Sunday: “A fire next to the railway is causing disruption between Sunderland and Middlesbrough.

“As a result, trains may be cancelled, delayed or diverted."

The 18:22 London Kings Cross to Sunderland also didn't stop in Hartlepool with passengers having to get off at Darlington.
