Families evacuated after hammer-wielding man turns gas on and threatens to set himself on fire in Leeds

Families on an inner-city estate in Leeds were evacuated after a hammer-wielding man barricaded himself inside his home, turned the gas on and threatened to set himself on fire.

West Yorkshire Police officers were called to Oatland Gardens, Little London, at around 7.40pm on Wednesday, August 12 after the man covered himself in a liquid and threatened to set it on fire.

After they arrived on the scene, the man grabbed a hammer and barricaded himself in his home.

After a tense 90-minute standoff, officers forced their way into the property when they spotted a small fire and Tasered the man, before taking him for a mental health assessment.

A police spokeswoman said: "When officers arrived at the scene, the man picked up a hammer and barricaded himself in his home and claimed to have turned the gas on.

"Neighbouring addresses were evacuated, the gas supply disconnected and a cordon put in place while efforts continued to bring the incident to a safe conclusion.

"A fire was then seen inside the address and, due to the immediate risk to the man’s safety, officers forced entry to the property at about 9.10pm and detained him after deploying Taser.

"The man remains in custody awaiting a mental health assessment."

She added: "It was also reported that a young child at a neighbouring address had been splashed with bleach. The child was not injured."
