Families could be banned from supermarkets in new rules for England

The Government is reported to be considering new rules which would ban families from shopping together in supermarkets in England.

Shops across the UK brought in tougher rules last week amid reports the Government was looking at boosting regulation, to cut the spread of coronavirus.

Shops have employed security guards to ensure people coming in are wearing a mask - unless they have a medical exemption.

Now the Government is reported to be looking at a new rule meaning people have to shop alone.

A senior government source told the Sun on Sunday : “It’s clear that some customers see the visit as a bit of an outing. The whole family goes together and they end up talking to friends who they bumps into while there.

“Often, there’s no reason why one household member can’t do the shopping."

Speaking during a Downing Street press conference on Friday, the PM said social distancing at a supermarkets isn't enough as transmission occurs through the handling of products too, reports The Mirror.

"Please remember that this disease can be passed on not just by standing too near to someone in a supermarket queue, but also by handling something touched by an infected person," he said.

"Remember also that one in three people with Covid-19 have no symptoms and that's why the original message of hands, face, space is as important now as it has ever been."

Government guidance on shopping in a supermarket advises people to "try to only touch what you are going to buy" when handling loose items.

And while the guidance said there is a "very low" chance of catching the virus through food or food packaging, it says "it is especially important to wash hands before handling food or eating".
