Families can get £500 for hosting a Spanish student - and they might even give your child's footie team a boost too

A group of Spanish students are coming to Manchester this summer, but the hunt is on for families they can stay with.

Children from Madrid, Toledo and Valencia are booked to come here for the last three or four weeks of the summer term.

The placements have been arranged through Language Link, set up by Bury man Haydn Royle around six years ago.

What started as a relatively small foreign exchange project has become more popular each year so there is more demand than ever for families willing to host the pupils.

Ideally families will have children of a similar age to the one they're hosting and while youngsters don't have to be studying Spanish, Haydn says it's 'a tremendous opportunity for those that are'.

As the placements take place during term time, the Spanish student would attend school with their British buddies.

And it's not just financially that hosts will benefit too, as Bolton boy Billy Kirkman discovered when he played host to Spaniard Luis Olivas, from Valencia, last year.

Haydn said: "I go to great lengths to match up the children's profiles and find something they have a mutual interest in.

"When Luis came over to stay with Billy he ended up playing for his football team Bolton Futsal Club.

"While he was here they got to the final for the first time ever and won three nil. It was Luis who scored the hatrick."

The Spanish pupils are due to arrive at the end of June and stay for three or four weeks.

While placements have been arranged for many of them - with the help of dozens of schools who work with Language Link and also benefit financially - there's a desperate shortage of homes for boys in years 6 to 10.

Haydn added: "The programme has grown successfully in recent years and always proves to be a culturally and educationally enriching experience for everybody involved and also a lot of fun.

"Many of our local school age boys and girls have forged friendships for life and are inviting their Spanish buddies back for the third or fourth consecutive year.

"And each year many of our British students welcome the chance to trade the gloomy north west for blue skies, beaches and paella on a return trip to stay with their Spanish buddies and their families."

This year's Spanish students include keen footballers and sport enthusiasts, musicians, linguists and members of the Spanish Scout and Guide movements, while others enjoy gaming or shopping.

Haydn added: "Whatever interests the British student has, Language Link is confident that there will be a suitable Spanish student with whom they can be successfully matched.

"All Spanish students are looking for British pals from caring, enthusiastic families with whom they can experience local life and improve their English during their stay."
