Families angry at 4am fireworks display to mark annual lads' trip to Benidorm

Families have criticised the 'selfish idiots' who set off fireworks ahead of their annual trip to Benidorm.

People living in Tyldesley were woken in the early hours of Thursday, with some fearing the noise was gunshots.

Residents have told the M.E.N how children and pets were frightened and unable to sleep after the 3.45am display, which families say appeared to have come from either Astley Street Park or the fields of Tyldesley Rugby Club.

Fireworks set off in Tyldesley

Many have taken to Facebook saying it's the annual tradition of Tyldelsey lads nicknamed the 'Benner Boys' and marks their annual trip to Benidorm.

One mum said: "It's a group of grown men that light them before they go to the airport for Benidorm every year. They usually set them off on Shakerley Common, but this time they seemed to come from the park.

"They woke my whole house up, they're all nuisances."

Jade Higgins, who also lives in Tyldesley, told us: "We could see them from our bedroom and looked like it was either the park or the rugby club, my fiance shot up in bed thinking it was gunshots and I was praying they didn’t wake my two-year-old."

Another resident said: "I'd just come off the back of two 12-hour shifts in a hospital and was up early next day for uni so it's not what I needed."

Fireworks (PA)

Some residents were a bit more forgiving, saying 'it's just boys being boys', while others said they were confused by being woken and thought it must be 2020.

Current law states that you cannot buy fireworks if you're under 18 and it's against the law for anyone to set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am - except on certain occasions such as bonfire night.

Fireworks can only be bought in the UK between October 15 and November 10.
