Families' anger at 'disgraceful' state of East Lothian cemetery as boards scattered around

Furious families in East Lothian are complaining about the condition of a cemetery after wooden boards were left lying on top of loved ones' graves.

Boards and metal frames were piled around Tranent Cemetery, which was left waterlogged by the recent bad weather.

Locals say attempts to get the council to clean up the cemetery have not been heeded.

The graveyard was pictured in a poor condition on Sunday and Monday, with much of the grass also churned up.

It's thought the boards may have been placed to allow people to walk on the muddy ground, but some appear to have been scattered on top of graves and several headstones are blocked by the metal frame.

Laura Nisbett Posted in a local Facebook group saying: "Today up at my great grandad's grave, this is a disgrace, the council have no respect for our loved ones."

Another person posted:  "I have said it before. Raised a complaint and basically got told by the council that this is the way it is and they blame it all on the weather. They don’t care. It’s a total lack of respect by the council and the workers.

"This has to stop. Disgraceful and disrespectful."

Another said: "That metal thing is right beside my mum's head stone. It is not right they need to get there fingers out their a** and fix it."

East Lothian Council are understood to be looking into the issue.
