Thirteen new council houses have been completed in Bulwell.
Nottingham City Homes (NCH) and contractor Robert Woodhead Ltd developed the homes, offAldgate Close in Bulwell, on behalf of Nottingham City Council.
The new homes, which were built on the derelict site of a former care home, have been renamed in honour of 100 years of council housing.
In a nod to this, the new homes now sit on the newly named Centenary Close.
The two, three and four-bedroom family homes, have been built to high energy efficiency standards and offer "warm, secure and affordable modern homes".
Daniel Birch, who moved into a home at the site with his family, said: "It's amazing living here, especially with kids. Our old property we lived on the top floor, we didn't have a garden, no lifts and it was a nightmare with kids. So it's just great for my kids to be playing in the garden now."
NCH and contractors Robert Woodhead Ltd joined Nottingham City Council, children from Rufford Primary School, St John’s Church and local residents to officially open the homes and unveil the new name for the road.
So far NCH has built nearly 600 new council homes for people, and is expected to work on nearly 50 more this year.
Nick Murphy, chief executive for Nottingham City Homes, said: “These homes on Centenary Close were just some of the ones being built in an important year for us.
“We are working to continue what was started 100 years ago and our commitment to building council houses is stronger than ever. We are proud to create homes that local people are proud to live in – they are warm, secure and modern and they are houses that Nottingham people can afford to live in and they are let to local families.”
Councillor Linda Woodings, portfolio holder for planning and housing at Nottingham City Council, said: “Nottingham’s council housing story is an important part in the city’s past, present and future. I’m really proud that we are marking the start of that journey by naming our newest build, Centenary Close.
“Affordable, good quality council housing is as important now as it was a hundred years ago, and together with Nottingham City Homes and other partners we’re developing a mix of properties across the whole city, from much-needed family housing to bungalows, flats and independent living schemes.
"Helping people on the housing waiting list remains a priority for the city council, which is why we have made a commitment to build or buy 1,000 council or social homes for rent over the next four years”.
