Fame Academy singer Malachi Cush one of two people hospitalised after crash

Singer Malachi Cush was one of two pedestrians hospitalised following a collision in Dungannon today.

The Co Tyrone man, who rose to stardom on TV series Fame Academy in 2002, is understood to have been standing near his car with a local businessman, aged in his 50s, when they were both struck by the Volvo vehicle on Scotch Street.

Both men are in a stable condition in hospital.

Reports from the scene indicated that the car involved came careering down the street before colliding with the 38-year-old singer-songwriter turned TV presenter and the other man.

The car involved is understood to have been stolen just minutes before the crash.

Police last night said the 'investigation is ongoing to establish the circumstances of this incident' and no arrests had been made.

Emergency services including the charity Air Ambulance were tasked to the scene on Scotch Street on Monday morning following a 999 call at 10.36am.

One man who was working in a nearby shop at the time of the collision told Belfast Live an off-duty paramedic was one of the first on the scene.

He said: "I heard a bang but to be honest I didn't think anything of it initially as there are always delivery lorries unloading out on the street so there's always a bit of noise.

"I was waiting on a customer coming to collect something and it wasn't until I stepped out the front that I could see the commotion and people running towards the men.

"Luckily one of the first people on the scene was a paramedic who happened to be out walking at the time and he and others were over with the men and putting them in the recovery position. There was a lot of panic and confusion about what had happened."

Another man who saw the aftermath of the crash said there was no one in the vehicle which collided with the men when he arrived on the scene.

Malachi's wife Claire posted on Facebook: "Sincere thanks to everyone for their messages, phone calls and prayers for Malachi today. They were very much appreciated!

"Thanks especially to everyone who assisted at the scene, the medical team, the PSNI and all who came to his aid, as well as the brilliant staff at RVH. Thank God, Malachi is now recovering well and will be singing again in no time. Thanks, Claire x"

PSNI Sergeant David Cochrane said: “We are looking into the cause of the collision and would be keen to hear from anyone who was in the area and saw what happened or who may have captured dashcam footage. Officers can be contacted at Dungannon police station by calling 101, quoting reference 548 03/06/19.”
