Famara Diedhiou says that his new Bristol City contract should be signed soon

Bristol City have good strength in depth and it was shown on Saturday when substitute Famara Diedhiou came off the bench to hit the winning goal with 12 minutes to play.

The Robins made it three wins in a row and back-to-back clean sheets and Diedhiou's fine left-foot finish late in the game against managerless Derby County saw the points remain in BS3.

Following the game, the 27-year-old striker discussed the last two weeks that saw him miss the Severnside Derby, recover from covid and give an update on his contract situation.

A new deal to remain in BS3 is not far from being completed for the match-winner who missed the Severnside Derby after a positive covid test.

"Yeah, I just had it," explained Diedhiou of catching Covid-19. "We just trained two days ago. I self-isolated with my family for 10 days. I just did some running on the treadmill and on the bike at home and everything to be ready for this game."

"No [it didn't affect me physically]. It was just the first few days. I was feeling not great - but after that no symptoms, just feeling right. I'm okay and all the family are good."

Head coach Dean Holden had confirmed just before that more than ten players and staff had been affected by the outbreak.

With no training ground to use until two days before the match, preparations were severely dented. But City defended stoutly and found that bit of quality play that enabled Diedhiou to slot past Marshall and win the game.

"I just asked Antoine to give me the ball on the 'D' and my first touch is great. I just struck it into the back of the net," he said of his first goal of the season.

"I'm always smiling, it doesn't matter what's happened. Life is too short. You never know what's going to happen next."

And as to the future? It looks to be red, for Knowle's finest.

Diedhiou has now hit 39 league goals for Bristol City and he's aiming to be the club's top scorer for a third season in a row despite a slow start to the 2020/21 campaign.

"I'm very happy here... I just love my job, my profession, and the squad and the players and I love everyone.

"We're going in the same way. I think it's [the new contract] coming soon."
