False rumors fuel shortage of paper products

False rumors have spread that paper products are in short supply due to the new coronavirus, prompting consumers to actually empty supermarkets, drugstores and other shops of these goods.

Industry associations are urging consumers to act calmly, emphasizing that sufficient inventory has been secured.

"I went to four stores, but I couldn't find any toilet paper," said a 60 year-old woman who visited a drugstore in Koto Ward, Tokyo, on Saturday. She looked puzzled in front of the empty shelves.

Since late February, erroneous information has been circulating on the internet, such as statements that "[toilet paper is made from] the same materials as masks" and "[paper products] from China will be embargoed."

More people are stocking up on toilet paper and tissue across the nation, and the spread of information on social media about shortages has exacerbated hoarding.

"Paper products are bulky and can't be stocked in large quantities, but they're brought in every day," an official at a major drugstore said.

An official at an industry group of paper manufacturers said: "A total of 97% of the paper products [used in Japan] are made in Japan. Please be assured that we are still producing and supplying as usual."
