False alarm after police and fire service rush to report of 'plane crash' in East Leake

Burning leaves may have led to emergency services being called to a false alarm reports of a 'plane crash' in East Leake.

Upon arrival three fire crews and a police helicopter were unable to find any trace of such incident despite a "thorough search".

Residents took to social media and messaged Nottinghamshire Live after a large amount of fire engines descended on Gotham Road, near the British Gypsum service centre, shortly after 8pm on October 15.

They had reported hearing of a "plane crash".

The National Police Air Service (NPAS) also dispatched a helicopter to assist with the search for any signs of a downed light aircraft.

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said: "We were called to a potential light aircraft crash at 8.15pm, but after a thorough search there was no evidence of an accident or any suspicious activity."

The force said the call was not a hoax and in fact a genuine report of a downed light aircraft.

It is thought a property owner burning leaves may have led to concerns from local residents.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service also confirmed the incident was a "false alarm".

A spokeswoman added: "There was a suspected plane crash. We got the call and we sent three crews from East Leake, West Bridgford and Highfields.

"It was a false alarm."
