'Fallout: New Vegas 2' Speculations: Game Could Be Greenlit Over at Xbox

A new round of speculations is now circulating online, claiming that a "Fallout: New Vegas 2" could be given the green light by Xbox to be developed by the subsidiary game development studio it owns.

Xbox Could Green Light 'Fallout: New Vegas 2'

According to ComicBook Gaming, a series of social media posts from credible insiders have sparked speculation that Xbox could be moving toward green-lighting a new "Fallout" project at Obsidian Entertainment.

They are the same studio behind the original "New Vegas" from 2010. The situation is still unconfirmed, but the conversations circulating it are the most concrete the rumors have gotten.

Reports began circulating earlier this week, suggesting that Obsidian Entertainment was at risk of being shut down as part of Xbox's ongoing internal restructuring. That report was swiftly dismissed by reliable gaming insider Jason Schreier on Bluesky, who confirmed Obsidian is not being closed.

While addressing the shutdown rumor, Schreier also touched on a separate claim that Obsidian was currently in early development on a new "Fallout" title. He said that specific rumor was not accurate as things stand right now.

However, he also noted that a new "Fallout" project at Obsidian could become a real possibility "real soon" as part of Xbox boss Asha Sharma's new roadmap for the company.

Obsidian Is Not Yet Developing a 'Fallout' Game

Schreier's clarification puts the situation in a holding pattern as Obsidian is not currently working on a "Fallout" game, but the door appears to be open for one to be approved in the near future. If it does happen, a "Fallout: New Vegas" sequel would be the most logical project for the studio to take on.

Obsidian was the original developer of "New Vegas" back in 2010, giving it a direct connection to the IP that no other Xbox studio shares. Bethesda Game Studios, which holds the main Fallout franchise, is already committed to "The Elder Scrolls 6" for the foreseeable future.

Since "Fallout 5" is not expected to arrive until well after 2030, an Obsidian-developed "New Vegas" sequel could serve as the franchise's next major entry in the interim.

What to Expect From 'Fallout: New Vegas 2'?

"Fallout: New Vegas" was set in the post-nuclear Mojave Wasteland, centered around the city of New Vegas and its surrounding factions fighting for control of Hoover Dam. The player took the role of a Courier shot in the head and left for dead, on a journey of revenge and survival across one of the most politically layered worlds in the franchise.

Its faction-driven storytelling and morally complex choices gave it a reputation for depth that many consider unmatched by any other "Fallout" game.

The original shipped in 2010 and has remained a touchstone in RPG discussions ever since, widely regarded as one of the best games in the franchise despite a notoriously rough launch. Its longevity in modding communities and continued presence in gaming discourse is a testament to how much goodwill the game still holds.

If a sequel is greenlit, Obsidian would be returning to a title that still means a great deal to its fanbase more than 15 years later.
