Celebrities reading mean tweets about themselves will never get old
Kimmel treated us to one of his most successful recurring skits this week: Celebrities Read Mean Tweets About Themselves. The music edition featured everyone from Iggy Azalea and Childish Gambino to Ed Sheeran and 5 Seconds of Summer, plus the return of Psy, who bravely promises to continue dancing, no matter what Twitter trolls try to put up his ass. Elsewhere in Twitter beefs: Gabrielle Union told Seth Meyers about her feud with Charles Barkley, and Scott Foley dropped by Kimmel’s desk to talk about Scandal, but ended up recounting a lengthy history of his standoff with William Shatner.
Jimmy Fallon hosted an epic karaoke sing-off
In a special post-Super Bowl live edition of the Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon pitted himself against fellow comedians Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart for an epic karaoke lip-sync battle. Thirteen minutes sounds like too long to watch three middle-aged celebrity men pretend to sing, but the guys covered Roar, Let It Go, Drunk in Love and more, and all of a sudden the bit was over. There was even time for a quick cameo appearance from karaoke secret weapon Drew Barrymore to round things out.
Fallon has kind of been killing it in general
The Tonight Show returned to its original home for a special week-long LA trip, and the move has been a storming success. As we mentioned, ratings for the show have been up 27% during the trip, due to triumphs like the live episode and Wednesday’s Saved by the Bell reunion, as well as Neil Young visiting the show to duet with himself (Jimmy’s impression remains spot-on) and a star-studded edition of Password, with Ellen DeGeneres, Reese Witherspoon and Steve Carell.
John Mayer’s guest-host game is strong
After last week’s Adam Pally/Ben Schwartz perfect storm of hosting weirdness, the Late Late Show took another risk on an interim host: John Mayer. While an acoustic singer-songwriter best known for his disastrous relationships with famous women might not seem like the most obvious choice, Mayer really pulled it off. The singer hosted with aplomb, joking around with Bob Saget, letting Mary Lynn Rajskub sing a song she wrote about him and, most memorably, interviewing the dancing Super Bowl sharks that took the internet by storm after (possible girlfriend?) Katy Perry’s half-time performance. The sharks were joined by a “marine biologist” named Carl, who translated for the pillow-y sea creatures while the sharks themselves mostly adopted pensive poses and struggled to stay in their seats, remaining just as adorable as when we first fell in love with them four days ago.
Eddie Redmayne looks exactly like Jennifer Garner
Having spent many years at a British all-boys school dressing in drag (a classic British pastime if ever there was one), Redmayne eventually graduated to playing women on the professional stage. Conan gives us a peep at the Theory of Everything star in costume as Viola from Twelfth Night, and he is revealed to be an exact doppelganger for Jennifer Garner. Exciting casting for a future biopic, perhaps?
