Falling for Christmas: Lindsay Lohan’s first major film in a decade drops today

Falling for Christmas, Lindsay Lohan’s first major film in over a decade, drops on Netflix today, and the forthcoming release has been trending online.

It makes sense: not only is Lohan back on our screens, but she’s back doing what she does best, playing in a rom-com. Plus, it’s Christmas-themed – what’s not to love?

Falling for Christmas is about Lohan’s character, newly engaged heiress Sierra Belmont, who loses her memory after a nasty fall during a skiing accident. As she recovers she’s looked after by widower lodge owner Jake and his daughter Avy. And in a comfortingly predictable turn, the two start to become incredibly fond of each other.

Chord Overstreet, who starred in the Apple TV+ show Acapulco in 2021, plays Jake, and George Young (Malignant), Jack Wagner (When Calls the Heart) and Olivia Perez (Sesame Street) also star.

Although Lohan has by no means been idle over the last decade, Falling for Christmas can be seen as a relaunch of sorts of her acting career, as it’s her biggest starring role in years.

Speaking to AP Entertainment about the new film, Lohan said: “It’s such a good overwhelming feeling. I didn’t know what to expect - that it would be this much of a big excitement - but it’s really hitting me now.”

The actor starred in the Bret Easton Ellis-written erotic drama thriller The Canyons in 2013, had a supporting role in supernatural horror Among the Shadows in 2019, and had a recurring role in season two of the Sky One show Sick Note in 2018.

Lohan has also starred in a number of shows as herself, such as on Channel 4’s Friday Night Feast in 2017, MTV’s Lindsay Lohan’s Beach Club reality show in 2019, as a panellist on The Masked Singer Australia in 2019 and as a narrator on Amazon Prime’s dating show Lovestruck High earlier this year.

Last week Netflix shared a promotional video of the actor singing Jingle Bell Rock, harking back to the now infamous scene of Lohan’s racy singing and dancing sequence in 2004’s Mean Girls. In the video, a clip of beaming Lohan, dressed in a bright pink fluffy hat and matching ski suit and singing the Bobby Helms track straight to camera, is then cut with scenes from the upcoming film. Her new Jingle Bell Rock rendition was also then released on all major music platforms on November 4.

Falling for Christmas is the first of two films Lohan has in the works with Netflix. The 36-year-old actor will also star in Irish Wish, which is set to be released in 2023. The film will see Lohan star alongside Ed Speleers (Outlander) and Alexander Vlahos (Sanditon) in a kind of Freaky Friday reimagination, where Lohan’s character Maddie wishes she was her best friend (who is getting married to the love of her life). Then, one day she wakes up as the bride-to-be.

Speaking to Forbes in 2022, Lohan said: “The reason why I really clicked with Netflix and Christina Rogers and the people that are involved in Falling for Christmas and the picture deal is because I felt like the romantic comedy movies have kind of dissipated a little bit and I really miss them. This was my forte when I started acting and when I was coming into my teens and coming into my own. I really want to bring that back in the best way that we can.”
