Fallen tree and flooding as Storm Francis batters Merseyside

Roads were blocked by flooding and a fallen tree after Storm Francis battered the Merseyside region overnight.

In St Helens, a local beauty spot was transformed into a lake by heavy overnight rainfall.

College Street was closed in both directions because of flooding between Kingfisher Drive and Swift Street.

Meawhile, a large tree which fell during Storm Francis completely blocked a road in the Sefton Park area this morning.

Greenbank Lane was closed in both directions due to the tree, which is blocking both carriageways.

The road has been cordoned off until the tree can be removed. Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service advised motorists to avoid the road.

A number of bus services were also diverted from the route.

The highest gusts of wind have been recorded after Storm Francis battered parts of the country.

The Met Office yesterday issued a yellow weather warning for wind and rain on Merseyside, increased to an amber warning for neighbouring North Wales.

Across the country homes were flooded, trees fell, rail lines were blocked and campers were rescued following the strong winds.

A number of places in England and Wales have seen their highest ever gusts of wind provisionally recorded in August.

The Met Office said gusts of 74mph had been recorded at Lake Vyrnwy in Powys, Wales - the highest August gust in this location since 1994.
