FalleN to retire at the end of 2026 after over two decades of competition

Brazilian Counter-Strike legend Gabriel “FalleN” Toledo has announced his intention to retire from competitive CS2 at the end of 2026, bringing a 23-year-long career to a close. The announcement was made on the IEM Rio 2026 stage a day ahead of FURIA’s semifinal showing at their home event.

What life has taught me is that regardless of whether we win or lose, there comes a point in life when we look back and it’s not just about the victory, it’s really about the journey. —FalleN

FalleN, often monikered as the Godfather of Brazilian CS, has been one of the icons of the Counter-Strike esports scene for decades, with his time playing Counter-Strike: Global Offensive being a clear high mark in his incredible career. The sniper started off his career in CS 1.6 as a star, before transitioning into leadership roles in CS:GO, where he most famously led the Luminosity-SK Gaming side to back-to-back major wins in 2016.

Across his career he led some of the greatest stars in all of Brazil including Marcelo “coldzera” David, and Fernando “fer” Alvarenga, and later Kaike “KSCERATO” Cerato, and Yuri “yuurih” Boian. The IGL also worked with countless other players, often extracting the best performances of their careers with his systems.

While he faced a few winless years across 2019 to 2024, his time with FURIA has more than rejuvenated him, once again bringing a core trio from his country to the top of CS. And even in the lean years, FalleN sometimes showed his tactical strength, notably earning a top-four finish at BLAST Spring Finals 2023 with an underpowered Imperial roster.

“You helped your team achieve the goal,” I thought, “My God, if I get good at this, I’ll be able to do so many cool things for whoever’s playing with me.” [It] made me realize that it was also very important to help the other people around me.—FalleN

What’s next for FalleN after retirement?

In his retirement speech, FalleN also hinted at his plans for his future beyond competitive play, saying he hopes to help other players change their lives through the game, as his was changed. The Brazilian veteran would be suited for a number of roles in the wider CS circuit, having successfully demonstrated his business acumen through his ventures like Games Academy and the FalleN store.

For now, though, FalleN has started the countdown till the end of his career, highlighting the 247 count in his speech. The Rio crowd, many of whom likely became fans of CS because of FalleN, was brought to tears by the speech, chanting “FalleN, we love you” in response to the announcement. The player was also joined by his partner, Leticia, towards the end of the announcement, helping FalleN through the emotional moment.
