Glen Powell got even more relatable during his hosting debut on Saturday Night Live this past weekend. During his opening monologue, the actor spoke about his experience with directing in his teen years.
“When I was a teen, I directed some of my own films,” he told the audience. “They were a little experimental, emotionally nuanced. I was watching a lot of French new wave at the time. I think you’ll see the influence, check it out.”
The video that then played was of Powell during his teen years lip-syncing to Fall Out Boy’s “Sugar, We’re Goin Down.” In all his low-res glory, Powell runs and jumps through the street while wearing a yacht captain’s hat, which is a choice, certainly, but one that also manages to fit with the 2005/2006 era aesthetic of the band.
As a millennial–and a Fall Out Boy fan–that counts as directing, in my book. We’ve all been out there with a handheld and a dream. And it looks like the band themselves agree.
“Want to direct the next fob music video @glenpowell?” the band’s account posted on Instagram and X.
I wouldn’t say no to it. Fall Out Boy are no stranger to experimental music videos, and I think Powell would fit right along with members Patrick Stump, Pete Wentz, Joe Trohman, and Andy Hurley. He has the right kind of manic theatre kid energy that I think Wentz especially would appreciate.
“Sugar, We’re Goin Down” was the lead single off Fall Out Boy’s second album, 2005’s From Under the Cork Tree. It launched them into mainstream popularity and remains one of their most popular songs to this day.
