Falkirk photographer captures amazing moment northern lights lit up sky

It's not very often we see such a spectacular display as far south as Falkirk, but this is the moment it was caught on camera.

The snaps were taken by local photographer, Simon Boyle, in Bo'ness over the weekend.

They show an amazing light show late on Friday April, 16, from the harbour hovering over the Firth of Forth.

The Aurora Borealis is caused by the interaction of the solar wind - which is a stream of charged particles escaping the Sun - and Earth's magnetic field and atmosphere.

It's most commonly seen over northern Scotland, but when a strong explosion occurs, the display can be seen further south.
