Falcons vs. Titans: Previewing Week 4 matchup by the numbers

The Atlanta Falcons (1-2) and Tennessee Titans (1-2) will face off on Sunday for the first time in four years. In their last meeting back in 2015, the Falcons squeaked out a 10-7 win despite two interceptions from quarterback Matt Ryan.

Going back to 1999, these teams have played each other five times, with Tennessee winning three of the five. Atlanta has won the last two though.

The strength of this current Tennessee team is its defense. This season, they are allowing 17.3 points per game — good for eighth lowest in the NFL. Tennessee’s third-ranked pass defense (189.7 passing yards allowed per game) will have its hands full with a Falcons offense that’s ranked No. 6 in passing yards through three weeks.

Against the run, the Titans aren’t nearly as effective, allowing 119 yards per game on the ground. Atlanta has been near the bottom in terms of rushing offense however, averaging just 74.3 yards per game.

The Titans started the season fast with a 43-13 win over the Browns in Week 1. They have dropped off since, as the team scored just 17 points in Week 2 and seven points in Week 3. Marcus Mariota remains a limited QB and Tennessee has a run-first offense. Derrick Henry leads his team with 210 rushing yards and they’re averaging 112.7 yards on the ground per game. Atlanta is allowing 100.

The Falcons opened as a 5-point favorite for Sunday’s matchup.
