Falcons updated cap space projection after first wave of 2019 NFL free agency

The Falcons freed up some cap space by restructuring Matt Ryan’s deal. However, after signing a couple guards, a pair of backup tight ends and a return specialist, they’re right back where they began the month of March: salary cap hell.

According to Albert Breer at Sports Illustrated, Atlanta has just $4.88 million left to spend for the 2019 season. That would give them the least cap space of any team in the league right now.

However, keep in mind that the money the team saved by cutting right tackle Ryan Schraeder won’t officially kick in until after June 1. That will give them another $6.45 million to work with for 2019. So, their true cap space number is closer to $11.33 million.

That’s still not much, though. They can save more room by making a few moves. Trading their struggling defensive end Vic Beasley for a draft pick would save them about $12.81 million, for one.
