Falcons turn to familiar face at QB with Kurt Benkert injured

Falcons quarterback Kurt Benkert put on a solid performance against the Broncos in Thursday night’s Hall of Fame Game. However, he suffered a toe injury in the fourth quarter and did not come back in.

Apparently, it’s serious enough for Atlanta to bring in another quarterback. According to the team website, the Falcons have signed Matt Simms, who was the third-string QB before Benkert came along last year.

Simms saw a lot of preseason action in his first stint in Atlanta, with a total of 966 passing yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. Simms played in the now-defunct Alliance of American Football this year with the Atlanta Legends.

We don’t know exactly what’s up with Benkert yet, but Ian Rapoport at NFL Network reported that the injury is “a major one.”
