Falcons trade TE Eric Saubert to Patriots for draft pick

The Atlanta Falcons announced on Monday that they have traded tight end Eric Saubert to the New England Patriots. In return, the Falcons will receive a conditional seventh-round draft pick.

Saubert was a fifth-round selection by Atlanta in the 2017 NFL draft. So far, he has played in 30 games but only has one start. He’s posted five catches for 48 yards. Most of his work has come on special teams.

The trade may not be an indictment of Saubert so much as an indication of the Falcons’ confidence in their depth at tight end.

Even though he was an alternate last season, Austin Hooper has legitimate Pro Bowl talent. Luke Stocker promises to be an excellent blocker and occasional gadget weapon – he also has previous experience with Dirk Koetter and tight ends coach Mike Mularkey. Logan Paulsen is the veteran of the group and an extension of the coaching staff.

Jaeden Graham is the real beneficiary of this trade, though. He’s played well in the preseason so far and is the best candidate to fill the No. 4 tight end spot on the roster.

Unless Hooper gets injured, the Falcons should be more than set at this spot and won’t miss Saubert much.
