Falcons trade for Justin Fields ‘in play’ if they don’t land Kirk Cousins

Free agency frenzy kicks off this week, which is big for the Chicago Bears in more ways than one. Not only will they look to address some big position needs, but free agency will be key in a potential Justin Fields trade.

After the Pittsburgh Steelers signed Russell Wilson, all eyes are on the Atlanta Falcons as they zero in on former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, the fate of Cousins could very well determine whether Chicago finds a trade partner for Fields in Atlanta.

As for the Falcons, they’re lurking as the team expected to be most aggressive in going after outside veteran options at quarterback. I’d expect a spirited run at Cousins, particularly with Baker Mayfield off the market. They have the space to work with, and an attractive situation to lure Cousins. And if they strike out there, I think a trade with Chicago for Justin Fields could be in play.

The Fields trade market hasn’t developed as many expected just a couple of weeks ago. The top suitors have been the Falcons and Steelers, with others including the Las Vegas Raiders and the Vikings. It’s unlikely Chicago trades Fields to a division rival, so essentially it sounds like the best option is for Cousins to return to Minnesota.

It’s a difficult position for Bears fans. While it would be nice to get Cousins out of Minnesota, there’s also the risk that Chicago loses its biggest suitor in a Fields trade if the Falcons land Cousins.

At this point, draft capital might outweigh the challenge of having to face Cousins twice a year in the division. Especially as the Bears have just five draft picks but continue to improve their defense heading into 2024.
