Falcons sign safety J.J. Wilcox to 1-year deal

The Atlanta Falcons are signing free agent safety J.J. Wilcox to a one-year deal, according to the team website.

Wilcox was a third-round pick by the Cowboys in the 2013 NFL draft. He spent the first four years of his career in Dallas, playing in 58 games and getting 38 starts. Wilcox played at a reasonable level, posting five interceptions and 15 pass breakups during his time there.

After the 2016 season, Wilcox started bouncing around the league. He spent 2017 with the Steelers, appearing in 12 games but only seeing one start. Last year, he played two games with the Colts and five for the Jets.

Wilcox projects as the primary backup for both starting safeties Ricardo Allen and Keanu Neal. He played both spots in Dallas.

We can’t totally rule it out, but there’s a decent chance this means Atlanta won’t be looking for a backup safety in the draft, which begins in three days.
