Falcons running back Devonta Freeman remains in the NFL's concussion protocol and was ruled out for Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Bucs on Friday by coach Dan Quinn.
Freeman returned to practice on a non-contact limited basis, he's near the end of the process of Step 4 in the league's concussion protocol, which calls for the player to continue cardiovascular, strength and balance training and he can participate in non-contact football activities such as throwing, catching, running, and other position specific activities.
The next and final step is full football activity clearance. Freeman has a shot to be cleared before the Falcons face the streaking Minnesota Vikings (9-2) on Sunday, Dec. 3.
Freeman entered the program after he was injured early in the game against the Cowboys on Nov. 2.
Running backs Tevin Coleman and Terron Ward took over against Seattle. Coleman rushed 20 times for 43 yards and a touchdown in the 34-31 victory over the Seahawks. Ward added 31 yards on six carries, including a key 17-yard run on the game-winning field-goal drive.
Freeman also was in the protocol from Aug. 13-27 after he was injured in the exhibition season.
In other injury news as the Falcons prepare to host the Buccaneers on Sunday, linebacker Duke Riley (knee surgery) is ready to return to action against the Bucs. He has missed the past four games after making five starts and playing in the first six games.
Riley, a rookie third-round pick (75th overall) from LSU, has 19 tackles on the season.
