Falcons declare Matt Ryan out, promote 3rd-string QB ahead of matchup with Seahawks

UPDATE: Matt Ryan has been declared out for Sunday’s game.

***************************************************

The Atlanta Falcons listed star quarterback Matt Ryan (ankle) as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks.

However, the recent decision to promote quarterback Danny Etling from the practice squad is a pretty good sign the team expects to be without Ryan on Sunday, which would make veteran Matt Schaub the starter.

Ryan is leading the NFL with 202 completions and 15 touchdowns, along with a 70.9 percent completion rate. His eight interceptions are uncharacteristically bad, however.

Ryan missed some time last week after going down with an ankle injury, and Schaub filled in very admirably as a replacement, completing all six of his passing attempts for 65 yards and a touchdown.

Schaub is a 15-year NFL veteran who made the Pro Bowl in 2009 and 2012 with the Texans. While he’s certainly not as good as Ryan, he’ll still provide the Seahawks with a challenge if he ends up starting on Sunday.

Etling was a seventh-round pick by the Patriots in 2018 and spent the entire season on their practice squad. He was acquired by the Falcons in August and had been on their practice squad ever since.
