Falcons place RB Ito Smith on injured reserve, promote OL Sean Harlow

The Falcons have been without running back Ito Smith since he sustained a concussion against the Rams in Week 7. On Saturday morning, the team placed Smith on the NFL’s injured reserve list.

Sean Harlow, an interior offensive lineman signed from Atlanta’s practice squad, takes Smith’s place on the active roster. Since backup Wes Schweitzer is out with a concussion, Harlow should give the team some depth behind Alex Mack at center.

Smith, who ended his rookie season on the injured reserve, was showing great promise in his second year. He was averaging an impressive 4.8 yards per carry, and at times looked like the Falcons’ most effective back.

Brian Hill assumes the team’s backup running back duties, but Devonta Freeman remains Atlanta’s starter as he tries to turn things around after a getting off to a slow start over the team’s first eight games.

The Falcons are heavy underdogs for their Week 10 matchup with the New Orleans Saints.
