The Atlanta Falcons have placed third-string quarterback Kurt Benkert on the injured reserve list, according to a release on the team website.
Benkert suffered a toe injury in the first preseason game of the year against the Broncos. We don’t know exactly what it is, but clearly it’s significant. Quinn told reporters on Sunday that Benkert will be out a while. In the meantime, the team has brought back former quarterback Matt Simms.
In a corresponding roster move, the Falcons have signed former Northwestern guard Tommy Doles.
Doles (6-foot-4, 296 pounds) started at right guard for the Wildcats three years and earned third-team All-Big Ten honors in 2017. If he’s going to make the roster, Doles will have to outperform players like Adam Gettis and Sean Harlow during the preseason.
