Falcons OL coach has high praise for backup Matt Gono

The Falcons drafted two offensive linemen in the first round, but the entire line has been so banged up this season that the group has struggled to build chemistry.

With so many injuries, the team’s backups have been getting extended time in practice. Atlanta signed undrafted free agent Matt Gono last season, and while his role has been limited, offensive line coach Chris Morgan had high praise for the backup tackle on Thursday.

As tweeted by ESPN’s Vaughn McClure, Morgan indicated that Gono could potentially be a starter someday:

Gono played well enough in the preseason to get some consideration at right tackle, especially with rookie Kaleb McGary out for most of training camp after needing a cardiac ablation procedure for his heart.

It’s still an uphill battle for the second-year offensive tackle, but he’s showing you don’t have to be a first-round pick to carve out a role in this league.

Even if it’s not in Atlanta, Gono has a bright future.
