Falcons officially announce signings of 2 free agent guards

The previously reported signings of free agent guards James Carpenter and Jamon Brown are now official. The Atlanta Falcons have announced both players have signed on their website.

Acquiring Carpenter and Brown is all about adding more power to the interior of the offensive line. Carpenter has three inches and at least 16 pounds on Andy Levitre, the team’s former starter at left guard. Meanwhile, Brown is two inches taller and 35 pounds heavier than Brandon Fusco, who he will likely replace at right guard.

This is what coach Dan Quinn has been talking about this offseason when he’s mentioned physicality. Quinn also likes their experience in a zone blocking scheme, per Vaughn McClure at ESPN.

As for Brown, he has gotten mostly negative reviews for his early work with the Rams. However, some analysts like what he did with the Giants in eight games in 2018.

If these moves work out, Brown and Carpenter could be Atlanta’s starting guards for at least the next three years.

Here’s a look at Carpenter’s contract, per Over the Cap.

Brown’s contract numbers have not been posted as of yet. It’s reported to be worth $18.75 million over three years, though.

If those figures sound familiar, that’s roughly what the team is saving by cutting Ryan Schraeder. His projected replacement is Ty Sambrailo, who just signed a three-year deal of his own.
