Falcons must slow down Colts running game in Week 3

The Falcons’ defense played well in their Week 2 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Just two weeks ago, however, they were gashed by Vikings running back Dalvin Cook for 111 yards and two touchdowns.

As the team travels to Indianapolis to take on the Colts this Sunday, they’ll have to stop a potent ground attack led by Marlon Mack and Jordan Wilkins.

While most expected the Colts to lay down and die after quarterback Andrew Luck’s abrupt retirement, they’ve actually played well in their first two games. Jacoby Brissett has gone 1-1 in Luck’s absence, throwing for five touchdowns to just one interception for a quarterback rating of 107.8.

The play of Indy’s offensive line has been the real key to the team’s success thus far, though. Running behind it, Mack has become the NFL’s third-leading rusher — with 225 yards over two weeks. Mack has averaged five yards per carry, but even more impressive is what he can do with nothing.

Watch him convert on this 3rd-and-1 when the hole is completely blown up by Tennessee’s defense.

Unfortunately for the Falcons, it’s not just Mack they have to worry about.

Last week, second-year running back Jordan Wilkins showed game-breaking ability as well. He rushed for 82 yards on five carries, including this pretty 55-yard run below.

As you can see, the two backs complement each other very well, while running behind one of the NFL’s best offensive lines.

Plus, you have to credit the Colts organization for not panicking after Luck’s retirement (even if their previous front office incompetence is what ultimately led to his decision).

Atlanta’s run defense showed up in Week 2. The Eagles’ top rusher in that game was Miles Sanders, who had just 28 yards on ten carries. Philly was dealing with several injuries though, and the Colts are a much more physical team up front.

Dan Quinn will need his defense to be ready for a physical matchup on Sunday as the Falcons try to seize an ailing NFC South division.
