Falcons legend Doddie Weir to receive OBE from Queen today

Newcastle Falcons title-winner and former Scottish rugby international Doddie Weir is set to receive an OBE from the Queen today.

Weir is being honoured for services to rugby, the Borders community and his contribution to research into motor neurone disease (MND).

Weir, who will receive the title  at the Palace of Holyrood House in Edinburgh, said it was a "great honour" to be recognised by the Queen.

The former Scotland Lock revealed he has MND in 2017, and set up the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation to raise funds for research and provide grants to help those affected by MND.

Weir's former club, Newcastle Falcons , have worn specially created charity shirts for two matches held at St James' Park .

Weir was part of the Falcons' 1997-98 Premiership winning side. He also won a title with Scottish club, Melrose, and represented the Lions.
