Falcons land QB, upgrade defense in new Draft Wire mock

For the first time in a few years, the Atlanta Falcons appear to have a real shot at winning their division. Not only do they lead the NFC South with a 4-3 record, but all 10 of the Falcons’ remaining games are against teams that are currently .500 or worse.

As we wait for Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans, let’s check out what Draft Wire’s latest mock draft is projecting for Atlanta. Here are all three Falcons mock projections from Draft Wire’s Curt Popejoy.

Round 1, Pick 20: CB Kalen King - Penn State

The Falcons have a pretty deep secondary at the moment, but A.J. Terrell only has one year left on his contract and Jeff Okudah is a free agent this offseason. Ideally, both players would return, but Atlanta must look into alternatives if that’s not the case. Penn State’s Kalen King would be a great consolation prize if Okudah departs this offseason. The Nittany Lions cornerback finished the 2022 season with three interceptions and 15 passes defended.

Round 2, Pick 52: QB Jayden Daniels - LSU

We still don’t know what’s going to happen with Falcons QB Desmond Ridder. The final 10 games of the season will likely determine whether or not the team moves forward with the former third-round pick. Ridder playing well and leading the Falcons to the playoffs would be the best outcome for Atlanta. If things go south, though, LSU’s Jayden Daniels is a good option. Thus far in 2023, Daniels has thrown for 2,573 passing yards, 25 touchdowns and three interceptions.

Round 3, Pick 84: EDGE Princely Umanmielen - Florida

The Falcons have a stout front seven on defense, but they’re still missing that difference-maker to fully maximize their interior linemen. Arnold Ebiketie has looked good but hasn’t played as big of a role as many expected. The team might prefer a more traditional defensive end. Florida’s Princely Umanmielen could be a good fit. The Gators edge rusher has 18 total tackles and three sacks thus far in 2023.
