Falcons hire ex-Chiefs DC Bob Sutton as senior defensive assistant

Former Chiefs defensive coordinator Bob Sutton has found himself a new home in the NFL.

The Atlanta Falcons announced on Monday that they would be adding Sutton to their defensive coaching staff as a senior assistant under head coach/defensive coordinator Dan Quinn.

Sutton and Quinn formerly worked together on the Jets defensive coaching staff in the 2007 and 2008. Quinn was the Jets defensive line coach while Sutton was the defensive coordinator.

According to the Falcons’ press release on the hiring, Sutton’s role will involve duties previously held by former assistant offensive line coach Kyle Flood, who recently left the Falcons to work at Alabama. Those duties will include in-game strategy, clock management and timeout usage.

“Adding someone with Bob’s knowledge and experience to assist with clock and game-management strategies will help us be the best version of the Falcons that we can be in 2019,” Quinn said in the release.

Sutton was not responsible for a lot of these things with the Chiefs as defensive coordinator, and he wasn’t exactly known for his ability to make in-game adjustments. Many would point to that as a big reason for his dismissal from Kansas City. It’s hard to envision Sutton as a fit for this new role.

The Chiefs don’t play the Falcons in the 2019 regular season, so fans will have to wait for the team to get a crack at their former defensive coordinator.
