Falcons GM says there’s ‘no particular time on that’ regarding Julio Jones deal

Julio Jones speculation is the name of the game today. The Falcons’ generational talent is expected to sign a contract extension this offseason that will make him the highest paid wide receiver in the NFL. Some recent reports suggest that a deal is imminent, but based on the latest we have heard from the front office, it sounds like there’s no particular rush.

Here’s what general manager Thomas Dimitroff had to say about an extension for Jones, according to a report by D. Orlando Ledbetter at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Wednesday:

“We’ll continue to talk with both Julio and his representation. . . We’ve have had really good conversations with them. There is no particular time on that. I’m not concerned about it, nor is he. We’ll get that figured out.”

At the moment, Atlanta is only a few million dollars under the salary cap for 2019. They’ll get $6.5 million in cap relief when Ryan Schraeder’s contract comes off the books after June 1, but they just don’t have much room to maneuver.

According to an estimate by Over the Cap, an extension for Julio Jones could save the team around $6.9 million this year.
