Falcons DE Steven Means to miss 2019 season with Achilles injury

Atlanta’s edge rotation took a hit this week at OTAs. According to a release on the official Falcons website, defensive end Steven Means will miss the entire 2019 season after suffering an Achilles injury.

Means came to Atlanta last season after playing as a career backup for the Buccaneers, Ravens, Texans and Eagles.

He earned the first four starts of his career with the Falcons in 2018. Means posted one sack and a career high 14 combined tackles, with three coming for a loss.

Means was supposed to round out the bottom of the edge rotation that includes Vic Beasley, Takk McKinley, John Cominsky, Jack Crawford and Adrian Clayborn. While losing Means for the year isn’t necessarily devastating, it doesn’t help a position group that was already relatively thin.

With Means out for the season, the Falcons will most likely replace him with a veteran edge who knows the system like Derrick Shelby.
