Despite using a first-round pick on Clemson CB A.J. Terrell, the Atlanta Falcons opened training camp with a glaring need for a veteran cornerback.
It looks like the team may have found a perfect fit in former Bengals first-round pick Darqueze Dennard, signing him to a one-year deal for less than a million dollars.
Dennard had an agreement in principal with the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier this offseason for a three-year, $13.5 million deal, but it fell apart at the last minute.
Considering he was going to get roughly $4.5 million per year from the Jags, paying less than a million for an immediate upgrade and potential starter is a home run for Atlanta — especially considering the team’s lack of cap space.
The best case scenario for the Falcons this season would be having Terrell and either Isaiah Oliver or Kendall Sheffield starting on the outside, with Dennard playing the nickel corner role.
It’s a great value and fit for Atlanta as the team transitions away from many of the core pieces from its Super Bowl run in 2016.
