Falcons announce 3-year extension for OL Ty Sambrailo

The Atlanta Falcons have announced an agreement to a three-year contract extension with offensive lineman Ty Sambrailo. Here’s what coach Dan Quinn said about the transaction, per Will McFadden at the official team website.

“We are excited to bring Ty back as a part of our brotherhood. . . His versatility has proven to be one of his many strengths. We look forward to him being a valuable piece of the offensive line.”

Sambrailo was a second-round pick by the Broncos in 2015, but he did not last long in Denver. After just seven starts in two years, John Elway dealt Sambrailo to Atlanta for a fifth-round pick in the 2018 NFL draft.

Since then, Sambrailo has played in 31 games for the Falcons, but mostly as a reserve – he has just six starts. This past season, Sambrailo played some right tackle after Ryan Schraeder’s meltdown. Late in the year, he also wound up playing at left guard. Sambrailo was not particularly impressive at either spot. For what it’s worth, Pro Football Focus graded him out at 67.0 for the year.

Until we know the financial details of the deal, it’s difficult to gauge the value. If they pay Sambrailo like a potential starting guard, that would be a troubling sign for the team’s offensive line plans. If it’s only a cheap deal one might expect for a swing tackle, that would be more appropriate.
