Falcons announce 2-year extension for backup QB Matt Schaub

The Falcons’ backup quarterback situation is not broken, so they’re not trying to fix it. According to Kelsey Conway at the official team website, Atlanta has agreed to a two-year contract extension with veteran QB Matt Schaub.

Originally a third-round pick by the Falcons in the 2004 NFL draft, Schaub spent the first three years of his career in Atlanta. He only played in two games before he moved on to Houston in 2007. Schaub went on to become a solid starter and two-time Pro Bowler for the Texans. After leaving Houston in 2013, he made stops in Oakland and Baltimore before returning to the Falcons in 2016. He will turn 38 years old before next season.

In 148 career regular-season games, Schaub has thrown for 24,887 yards and 133 touchdowns. He’s one of the NFL’s top backups. Expect Kurt Benkert to continue as the team’s practice squad and third-string QB.
