German side Werder Bremen have seen both their manager and his assistant resign in disgrace — after allegedly producing FAKE coronavirus vaccine passports.
Markus Anfang and No.2 Florian Junge have both walked out on Bremen, though they deny the allegation, just hours before a clash against Schalke 04 in the 2. Bundesliga.
Earlier in the week reports circled that Anfang was under investigation and the city of Bremen's health authorities quickly filed a criminal complaint in one of European football's most bizarre covid-related tales.
A public prosecutor has been looking into the issue and though Germany's Kicker magazine initially reported them to have been sacked, the club have since release a statement with an apologetic Anfang admitting he's quitting.
Anfang said: "Due to the ongoing extremely troublesome situation for the club, team, my family & myself, I have decided effective immediately to end my time as Werder coach.
"I’ve requested to those responsible at the club that my contract be dissolved & this has been granted.”
Werder managing director Frank Baumann said: “With their step, Markus and Florian are taking on responsibility and are helping to end the unrest that has arisen around the club and the team in recent days. We respect their decision and will now start looking for a new head coach. "
Some form of proof of either vaccination, a recent covid recovery or a recent negative covid test is required for entry to all German stadia in the Bundesliga setup, unlike in the Scottish Premiership (above a 10,000 capacity) and the English Premier League where only vaccine passports are required.
