'Fake' RSPCA officers trying to steal dogs from people's homes

The RSPCA issued warnings over scammers impersonating their officers in a bid to steal pets.

The animal charity took to social media to warn owners that people across parts of England and Wales have been impersonating frontline staff in a cruel scam aimed at stealing people's pets.

Owners were assured that genuine officers will always wear branded RSPCA uniforms and carry ID.

The RSPCA said if pet owners are worried, or suspect somebody may be impersonating an officer, to tell them.

They added local police should also be informed if you believe someone is pretending to be from the charity who is not genuine.

Dog thefts have risen sharply during the lockdown periods caused by the coronavirus pandemic, according to research by non-profit organisation DogLost UK.

Their research revealed the dramatic rise in pet thefts, with reports of stolen dogs 65% higher in some areas of the UK compared to the previous year.

A spokesperson for the RSPCA posted on Facebook and Twitter: "People across certain areas of England and Wales have been impersonating our frontline staff in a bid to steal pets!

"We wear RSPCA branded uniforms and carry ID - if you're worried, ask to see this. Call us on 0300 1234 999 and the local police if you believe someone's impersonating us".
