Fake reference Glasgow carer caught trying to lie his way into a job

A Glasgow carer has been slapped with a warning after he was caught faking a work reference.

Simon Omerigwe was working as a support worker for adults with learning disabilities at Balshagray House when the incident occurred.

At a date between November 2021 and January 2022, Mr Omerigwe found to have falsified a reference from someone without their knowledge or consent in a bid to gain employment with Florence Staffing Ltd.

Mr Omerigwe will now have warning on his registration for 36 months following a panel decision by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC).

The decision reads: "Social service workers must be truthful, open, honest and trustworthy. They must not behave, while in or outside work, in a way which would call into question their suitability to work in the social services profession.

"You provided to a prospective employer a false reference in respect of your application, purporting to be from ZZ. This document was composed by you in ZZ's name and submitted without her knowledge or consent.

"Your actions are dishonest. By falsifying a reference, you misled a prospective employer into believing ZZ had provided a reference for you when she had not. Your conduct calls into question your suitability to work in social services as it demonstrates a clear lack of integrity.

"Your behaviour falls far below the standards expected of a social service worker and has the potential to negatively affect the social services profession."
