Fake Nike trainers worth £50k seized following Swansea investigation into sales on Facebook

Fake Nike trainers worth £50,000 that were being sold on Facebook have been seized.

The counterfeit trainers were being sold on the social media site in the Swansea area.

Swansea Council's trading standards launched an investigation which led them to a storage facility in the Midlands where more than 2,000 trainers were found.

Fake perfume and make-up was also confiscated while the council's probe continues.

It comes as fake items, labelled to look like popular clothing brands such as Nike and Adidas, continue to be advertised on social media.

Electrical products such as digital cameras and hair straighteners are also been advertised and sold at a fraction of the cost of the real items.

Fake make-up and perfume was also seized (Swansea Council)

Rhys Harries, Swansea Council's trading standards team leader, said: "The latest seizure of counterfeit goods follows our investigations into fake products being sold on social media here in the city.

"We’ve now confiscated all the items found in storage as part of our ongoing investigations."

People in Swansea are now being urged to take care when buying products online, particularly on social media.

Mr Harries added: "At this time of year, lots of consumers are looking for a bargain and often respond to ads on social media where a wide variety of products, claiming to be popular brand names, are sold very cheaply."

More about trading standards:

He added: "It is very rarely the case that these items are authentic and they are usually poor quality. In many instances, electrical items are also potentially dangerous.

"Our advice to consumers is simple – purchase your items from reputable high street shops or use authentic web-based stores to buy gifts for Christmas.

"Many of them are already offering bargains and you will be safe in the knowledge your items are authentic and have passed certain safety requirements."
