A fake “Meghan for President” website has been set up claiming that the Duchess of Sussex has entered the race to become the next US president ahead of the presidential election between Donald Trump and Joe Biden.
The website, which is called meghanforpresident.com, features photographs of Meghan at several former engagements, including a visit to the Hubb Community Kitchen in West London earlier this year and during her royal tour to South Africa in 2019.
In a blog post published on 29 September, falsely credited to the Duchess of Sussex, it states that “after months of reflection and internal discussions”, she had “heard your calls to become President of the United States of America”.
“It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few months, that I feel prepared to make this decision,” the post reads.
“With your support I believe we can bring equality, empowerment, and kindness to this dangerous, aggressive and confrontational world we live in.”
The website also includes real quotes from Meghan, including one that she told InStyle during an interview in 2015, which states: “ I’ve also learned that saying 'no' is just as valuable as saying 'yes.' It’s something that, I think, comes with age and really having a sense of your self-worth.”
Another real quote from the former actor featured on the website is one that she said during a televised interview several years ago while she was still starring in Suits.
“We just need to be kinder to ourselves,” she said at the time. “If we treated ourselves the way we do our best friend, can you imagine how much better off we would be?”
On the meghanforpresident.com website, a button at the top seemingly offers internet users the chance to “contribute” to the pretend campaign.
However, nothing happens when you click on the button.
In a recent blog post, the website also provides advice to Americans on how to cast a vote for a write-in candidate, including guidance from usa.gov.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved to Santa Barbara, California with their son, Archie, earlier this year after officially stepping down as senior members of the royal family.
Meghan was born in Los Angeles, California, spending her childhood growing up in Hollywood.
