'Fake image' sparks University of Leeds racism row on social media

The University of Leeds has strenuously denied allegations of condoning racism on social media.

A post was widely shared after appearing to show a conversation between a university spokesperson and a future student.

But the university has made clear that this a doctored screenshot.

In it, a student supposedly enrolling in September asks if she can still attend the institution after posting a 'racist' comment.

The doctored reply from the university is that she has done nothing that would "violate" her offer.

"We look forward to seeing you in September", it reads.

The university has responded to say it is saddened by the events and how spreading misinformation takes attention away from real issues.

In a string of tweets, it said: “We have been made aware of a fake screenshot. This is a doctored image and no members of the social media team have had contact with this individual.

“We stand with the Black community because #BlackLivesMatter .

“Racism, in any form, has no place in our society.

“We are deeply saddened by the events taking place over the world in recent days. Racism in any form is unacceptable.

“That an individual would spread misinformation at a time like this and take attention away from the real issues, is disgraceful.

“Claims were also made regarding donations to the University, and this person’s prospective place.

“Donors to the University are not granted any influence over University business or right to favourable treatment. This is outlined in our gift acceptance process.

“We stand with the Black community; our students, staff and alumni, because #BlackLivesMatter

“More to follow.”
