Fake coronavirus public information report claims sale of alcohol is banned

In some countries across the world, the sale of alcohol has been banned while the coronavirus lockdown is in place.

The capital of Greenland, Nuuk, has banned the sales in an attempt to reduce violence against children, it is reported.

And the alcohol sales have also been suspended in South Africa while the country imposes coronavirus rules.

Following the ban of alcohol sales in other countries, a fake public information report has circulated on social media.

The image is branded with NHS and Government watermarks and is in the same format as other Covid-19 reports.

It states: “A strict ban on alcohol has been issued with immediate effect.

“Simon Stevens, chief executive officer of the NHS has ordered a ban on consumptions of alcohol after his team discovered that the toxin lowers immunity.”

However the image being circulated is fake and the UK government has not currently banned the sale or consumption of alcohol.

Currently, the only ban on selling alcohol relates to pubs, bars and restaurants that have been ordered to close by Boris Johnson.

While there is no ban in place, the World Health Organisation has cautioned against using alcohol to cope with stress during the coronavirus lockdown, calling it an ‘unhelpful coping strategy’.
