Never before has the Christmas classic Fairytale of New York been so cute.
In a specially adapted rendition of the Pogues’ festive standard, Key Stage 1 pupils at Christ the Redeemer have sung their hearts out as part of a special celebration of the school’s 20th anniversary.
A Fairytale of Lagmore is a tongue in cheek tribute to the West Belfast district where the school draws its 715 pupils from.
The lyrics mention a few local landmarks, a change from the original, including Mo’s Turkish Barbers, the Laurel Leaf and Chip Co.
And instead of the “boys of the NYPD choir... singing Galway Bay”, it’s the “girls of the CTR choir... singing outside the Spar”.
Vice Principal at the school, Neil Watson, said around 200 P3 and P4 pupils were involved in the video.
He added: “We’re very proud of them all and it’s gone down very well this last few days when we’ve done the live version for parents. The music was co-ordinated my Miss Clenaghan who also did the lyrics with Miss Bunting and the kids have just loved it. She’s a real talent when it comes to these videos.
“It’s been a really big undertaking between Miss Clenaghan and the Key Stage 1 co-ordinator Miss McKeown, but a lovely part of our celebrations of the school being opened 20 years way back when we’d only 38 pupils.”
The video also has a Strictly reference and there are plans for a Strictly night at the Devenish as part of the anniversary celebrations.
