Fairfield General Hospital partially evacuated after fire breaks out at café

A small fire broke out at Fairfield General Hospital this morning.

Crews were called to the scene after staff noticed smoke coming from a café in the Broad Oak Suite at around 9.30am on Sunday (September 27).

A flood in the ceiling of the room had spread to electrics nearby.

The site was evacuated to allow hospital services to continue. No one was injured as a result of the incident.

Bury Fire Station watch manager, Steve Wilcock, told the Manchester Evening News : “We concluded the reason for the fire was due to a faulty valve in a head tank in the roof space which caused flooding.

“It shorted out some electric in the roof space and caused a small fire.

“We used specialist fans to remove the smoke and the firefighters used breathing apparatus so they could go in and find the cause of the smoke.

“We wanted to come up with a scenario because the ripple effect of shutting the building down would be significant.

“We managed to isolate certain bits of the electric system and sort out the flooding issue.

“The staff were really helpful and we left at 11.30am.

“The flooding caused some damage to the ceiling space but the building has not been rendered unusable.”
