Fairfax estate could set new Australian property record

It is being listed without a price guide, but this glittering Sydney trophy home is on the market and likely to see Australian price records tumble.

Fairwater has been the residence of the Fairfax publishing family since 1901 and it was the home of Lady Mary Fairfax up until her death almost a year ago.

The waterfront estate in leafy Point Piper stretches from New South Head Road to Seven Shillings Beach.

It was first built in 1882 and is rare example of a stately residence from a bygone Sydney era.

The two-storey home also has living and bathrooms for both the family and their staff as well as a pool and extensive gardens.

Ken Jacobs, from Christie's International Real Estate, has been appointed to sell the property.

He also sold the property next door, Elaine, in April last year.

It was also owned by the Fairfax family and sold for a record at more than $70 million.

Fairwater is more than 4,000 square metres larger and is expected to top that price.

Point Piper is home to many of the Harbour City's most pricey and exclusive properties, with former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull among the notable people who live there.
